THE ULTIMATE PENGUIN GUIDE

Introduction:

To parents that considered letting their kids join Club Penguin, you may have

been reluctant to do so. What is Club Penguin anyway?

Club Penguin is a virtual world where members create avatars of Penguins and

interact with others penguins.

During the signup process parents are asked to include their own password and

email as well, thus giving them control should they feel the need. At this time you

can chose an appropriate age level for your child to join. Additionally, you can

select what type of chatting capabilities you want your child to have: Standard or

Ultimate.

“Ultimate” offers you the ability to select from “pre-made” questions and

responses; “standard” is the setting that lets you type in whatever you want to

other penguins.

Once your account is created, you begin in the middle of a snowy town along

with a lot of other penguins. Nearby is a gift shop, coffee shop, and a nightclub

that you can visit.

When you are ready to go to another place, there is a Map icon on the bottom of

your screen that you can use to navigate around the game world. Some of the

places allow you to play games, some by yourself and some games with others

which allow you to earn coins that you can then use to buy things for your

penguin, such as pets called Puffles.

You can also become someone’s buddy if invited, or invite others to be yours.

Becoming a buddy with someone means you can send them a letter. You do this

by using the built-in service (communicating outside Club Penguin is not

possible). You can also quickly visit a buddy’s virtual home (or “igloo”) and see

what they’ve done with the place.

Everywhere you go in penguin-land is the all-seeing moderator, which is

represented by the capital “M” on a shield of gold.

Basic membership is free, but premium membership offers you the ability to

purchase more items of clothing to dress-up your penguin, decorate your igloo,

and buy more Puffles if you wish.

Club Penguin became available to the public in October 2005 and has grown into

one of the most popular online communities in the world. Though the game can

be played for free, many of the features are not available unless a subscription is

purchased

To move around the game world, just click the spot you want to move to. To

enter or leave a room or passage, click on the door or passageway.

Each player has an igloo to call home, but only members can have other

penguins come to their igloo. Members can also buy items to decorate their

igloos.

How much is a paid subscription? It ranges from $5.95 every month, $29.95 for

six months, or $57.95 for a year). As a member, you can buy anything from

shops, own multiple puffles, enjoy early access to new parts of the game, and

buy furniture. Members also have access to Members-only Parties hosted by Club

Penguin.

If you choose not to be a paying member, you can still buy colors and player-card

backgrounds and can go anywhere (except during member parties) as well as

play games. Non-members may also receive and use items given out at parties

that are sometimes thrown for all players. Non-members are also restricted to

only two puffles and they can only be red or blue.

Items:

Players may use the coins they collect from playing minigames to purchase

various items from shops.

Clothes are for members only, except for the items given out for free at parties

and on the pirate ship.

Furniture is for members only and can be used to design and decorate a player’s

igloo.

Members can buy Flooring for their igloos. There are currently four different

floors to choose from. Igloo upgrades range from 1000 to 5100 coins depending

on the style.

Hidden locations:

The Dojo is hidden beneath the mountain at the top of the map. To access it you

need to simply click on it.

The Iceberg is the larger of two white islands in the top right corner of the map.

The Mine Shack is behind the Plaza.

The Manhole Cover is located in the Plaza, in front of the Pet Shop.

Minigames:

Single player games give you more coins than multi-player games.

Single-player games—

Astro Barrier, Ballistic Biscuit, Bean Counters, Cart Surfer, Ice Fishing, Jet

Pack Adventure, Puffle RoundUp, and Thin Ice.

Multi-player games—

Find Four, Mancala, and Sledding

Games that do not get you coins are Ice Hockey and Snowball Fights.

Puffles:

Puffles are small, fluffy creatures that players may have as pets. They are

available from the Pet Shop in blue, red, green, black, pink and purple. Nonmembers

have access to two puffles, either blue or red although members are

allowed to have up to 12 Puffles.
